The name “Brannan” is our way of raising a glass to the legendary founder of Calistoga, Sam Brannan. Because of his vision back in days of the gold rush, Calistoga has now become “The Crown of the Napa Valley” a health and wellness destination with its amazing beauty, superb soil, comfortable climate, and world-class fruit.
We see a vision just like Sam did, which is why our wines and winemaking techniques highlight everything this land has to offer.

While it’s true that Sam Brannan was one of California’s earliest pioneers and the visionary behind the creation of Calistoga, his story has major significance in shaping Napa Valley into the world-class hospitality x that it is today.

Sam walked through the streets of San Francisco with a vial of gold flakes shouting ‘Gold! Gold! Gold’ and is accredited to starting the Gold Rush.

After the huge success and becoming the states first millionaire, he visited White Sulfur Springs Resort in St. Helena and had the vision for a world class hospitality destination.

1857 “Sam Brannan’s Hot Springs Resort.” / The Calisoga Depot
Sam launched his plan to buy land in the Hot Springs Township with the goal of building the finest hot spring resort on the West Coast.
1862
Cottage Grounds / Sharpsteen Museum
Sam Brannan’s Hot Spring Resort opened with over 2000 acres and in that same year he planted the first vineyards.
